Broadband problems in Manchester, Otley, Edinburgh and Shetland

As of 5 November, there appear to more BT faults affecting broadband in several areas, including Otley/Leeds, Manchester, Edinburgh and Lerwick (Shetlands).  You can see progress of the faults on the BT fault tracker here.  The symptoms will usually be that you can get an ADSL or "internet" LED on the modem/router (technically the LCP negotiation works), but password authentication then hangs or fails.  The advice would be to not adjust your settings, although powering off and restarting your router may help.
