Aleutia T1 Low Power Mini PC - Ubuntu

The low power T1 idles at 10 Watts and peaks at just 14 Watts despite boasting a 1.6GHz processor, 2GB RAM, and desktop-class hard drives. The Mac Mini, by comparison, claims to be the world’s most energy efficient desktop, despite idling at 13 Watts and costing nearly three times as much. Price: £149 (ex VAT).

Database enabling (MySQL)

GreenNet’s database enabling service is designed for hosting websites that are built on a dynamic model where pages are served up from a database as users call for them.
Database enabling allows you to use your website, not only for static files of html web pages, but also for any kind of PHP/CGI system to pull information out of a database and display results on the web.

Dial-up Internet access

For a pay-as-you-go dial-up solution to connect to the internet via a local rate access (0844) and fully supported by phone and email.

Discussion boards

A discussion board is an online tool that provides a simple and intuituve way for a group of people to respond to discussion topics. We use PHPBB, which is a highly customisable open source discussion board. For a demo visit the Gaia’s Cafe Forums. Like Web Board it is managed via a web-based interface. It can send emails to people participating in an online discussion. Access can be restricted to a list of users or just those who login with a username, password and email address.

Domain names

A domain name is a unique name that identifies you or your organisation on the Internet. It is registered in the form of yourname.co.uk or yourname.org.uk, yourname.net or yourname.com or yourname.org. You choose which form you prefer depending on the nature of your organisation or content. The domain can then be used for your e-mail adresses e.g username@yourname.org.uk and web site URLs e.g www.yourname.org.uk depending on the package you have chosen.
All of our web hosting options (except Home/Activist membership, which includes a .gn.apc.org subdomain) come with a domain name registration and include annual renewal.

Domain parking

For domain names you may want to use later.

Domain service

For your additional web site and E-mail address.

Fixed rate Internet access (FRIACO)

For a fixed rate dial-up connection to the internet (note that this requires a BT line)

This package is designed to meet the online needs of individual home users. It includes your own sub-domain style email address and web site URL.

Home/Activist Plus membership

For your own domain name, E-mail address and web site.

Intranets

Intranets are a great way to share information and tools to help people work together in a team, especially when that team is spread out geographically. They offer imaginative solutions to organisations that are looking to reduce the environmental impact of running an office and transporting staff there each day.

GreenNet builds open source intranet solutions that include shared calendars, file stores, discussion spaces, notes, image galleries and contacts databases.

Our intranets are cheaper and more sharable than SharePoint Services.

Linux desktop training

TuxYou may have heard us banging on from time to time, about going Open – kicking the Microsoft habit, and exploring the friendlier (often also safer) world of Linux-based technologies. Well there’s never been a better time to make the shift

Mailing lists

Mailing lists are cheap and efficient way of distributing information on a large scale and to set up your own discussion forums. Moderated lists allow you to approve every posting that is made to your list before the message is distributed to all your subscribers.

Maxi membership

For complex and extensive web sites

Organisational membership

For larger organisations with more experience of using the Internet for professional advantage and for Individuals and organisations keen to customise their presence on the Internet.

Password protected web site area

If you are running a static website, and would like a part of it to be private to a particular group or groups of people, we can set up password protection for those sections.

Recommendation discounts

GreenNet relies almost entirely on word of mouth within the green and progressive community for advertising its ISP and web hosting services. While we like the good things that people say about us in any case, if you are an existing GreenNet member you can now claim an additional 3 months’ free membership if someone signs up on your recommendation to a GreenNet Home/Activist or hosting package. Just tell them to mention your name and address or your billing id when they apply.

Server hosting

GreenNet’s Systems Administration and Support department provides hosting on our shared web server, and for dedicated and virtual servers. It consists of a small team of dedicated and experienced Linux network administrators. The same team is in charge of both our own system and clients’ remotely managed servers.

Small Group membership

For smaller organisations wanting a professional presence on the web

Web hosting

GreenNet offers a web hosting service which allows you to build a web site for the widest internet audience. All GreenNet websites are hosted on high performance Linux/Apache servers on the Internet backbone. These servers support PHP and CGI scripting and MySQL databases. The search engine is Ht://Dig. See our server hosting section for more details.

Web projects with ActionApps

ActionApps is a content management system (CMS) that made it possible for GreenNet to offer low-cost database driven websites which focused on maximising attention to content and minimised the effort needed to get it online. It was GreenNet’s first CMS, developed in 2000 by a group of techies from the APC network, and designed to meet the needs of civil society organisations wanting a dynamic presence on the web.

Web projects with Drupal

Powered by DrupalGreenNet’s current CMS of choice is Drupal. It is an open source system for developing websites and publishing content to them. A Drupal website has at its heart a database of the site’s content (articles, reports, profiles, events etc..). The system serves content from the database to the right pages of the site in the appropriate style, as they are called for by site users. Site authors can add, modify and manage their content in that database using simple private online forms.

Wikis

A wiki is a really simple to use online collaborative workspace. It looks like a website, is accessible through any internet-connected computer, and behaves like a group drafting table. Use it to develop proposals and reports with your colleagues, to gather notes during sessions of a workshop, to create a space for a community to share information, or to keep track of a project development process. Adding, editing and linking between content couldn’t be easier.
