A bill of rights for the internet age has been proposed at the UN Internet Governance Forum in Athens. The bill would update and restate rights that have been enshrined for centuries, said Robin Gross of civil liberties group IP Justice. See the Bill of Rights IGF Workshop wiki for more details.
Civil society groups gathered in Tunis, disappointed by the setback in their quest to wrest control of Internet governance from the United States, are vowing to make the best of the deal that was struck.
These are the areas to be covered by the new UN body, the Internet Governance Forum (IGF), scheduled to meet for the first time next year.
In meetings preparing for WSIS (World Summit on the Information Society) the civil society and then the private sector condemned the decision taken in some meetings to exclude everyone but government officials.
The meeting opened with a reminder to delegates that technology leads to real progress only when fully supported by people, “not to mention governments and industry”.
