Forgive me if this is not the place to ask for help, but hysteria is setting in.
It all started back in August, when I caught the blaster worm virus.
Once I realised why Windows kept closing down on me, I got a friend to download the patch from microsoft (I couldn't stay online long enough) - we installed it & things seemed to go back to normal.
Wanting to learn from this painful lesson I paid for & tried to download Norton Antivirus. But it wouldn't download completely. Even after appearing to be downloading for a couple of hours, it was not complete.
Screens would appear and then more or less instantly disappear, however once I managed to click on "Next" & the following error message appeared:
"Windows cannot find c:\Program Files\Norton Antivirus\navapsvc.exe"
I sent a variety of messages to Symantec trying to get them to help me, but with no luck. They just repeat the same instructions.
So I cancelled the download order & bought a CD to be sent by post.
The CD arrived a couple of days ago & guess what - the same thing happened! The very same error message appeared during installation. However it did seem to install & the icons are there on the Start Menu.
But it won't work.
So then I tried to uninstall it, so I could try again - (I had forgotten to turn the firewall off, & I thought that might be the reason)
& it won't uninstall. Duh .....
I have a Dell PC, running Windows XP.
Please can somebody help me - I have been on the point of throwing the PC out the window on several occasions.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!
Regards,
Kate

Re: Problems downloading Norton
I posted here before about NIS/NAV, and haven't checked back for a while. I had bought NIS 2004, managed to get a refund and went back to using NIS 2003 - though I had turned off the NIS bit and was just using the AV protection (have gone over to broadband, and the modem has a firewall so didn't feel the need to have the Norton one).
In the autumn I had a complete computer meltdown, unrelated to Norton (I think, though it would have been a nice scapegoat!), and reinstalled everything (how I hate typing "format c:"!!!!). NAV seemed to work ok, but recently has started creating problems (computer wopuldn't start properly, all access to internet blocked etc.), and I have had to uninstall it. Having had so much grief with Norton products, I have made a new year's resolution: ditch anything to do with Norton and go for something completely different!
For those of you wondering about the number to use for Norton, I had a London-based number that I used last time to get my refund (as described above). I don't know if it still works, but you could try 020-7616 5600.
Good luck - and boo hiss to Norton and all its wicked (don't-)works!
Re: Problems downloading Norton
JUST AN UPDATE TO MY LAST POSTING,
I EVENTUALLY RECEIVED A REFUND ON MY CREDIT CARD FOR THE UPDATE OF NIS 2004 THAT I ORDERED OVER THE INTERNET
(I WAS UNABLE TO DOWNLOAD, COMMUNICATION PROBLEMS SOUND FAMILIAR?)
I THEN PURCHASED THE NIS DISC FROM HIGH STREET SHOP, EVERYTHING SEEMS TO BE WORKING OK AT THE MOMENT, LOADING IT WAS SCARY THOUGH, CAUSE I HAD TO UNINSTALL 2004 VERSIONS THAT I ALREADY HAD AND REMOVE WINDOWS FIREWALL SO THAT I COULD REPLACE WITH 2005 VERSION, THEN DOWNLOAD UPDATES FROM SYMANTEC, AS I AM NOT ON BROADBAND IT TOOK AGES!
BUT HEY IT WORKS, SO FAR. ALTHOUGH I AM VERY WARY AND KEEPING FINGERS CROSSED.
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Hi, I've just sorted out a similar communications problem on a friend's PC - the first NIS2005 file downloaded and the payment was taken, but it wouldn't then connect, giving an "error communicating with server message". Incredibly, it turned out to be NIS2004 firewall causing the problem! (no permit/block messages came up though). Once I disabled the firewall it worked OK (then took an hour to download, install & update - on broadband). My advice to everyone here would be to let your current subscription expire then switch to AVG7 or Avast (search on Google) - both are free and don't take over & slow down your PC like Norton does (assumng it ever workes in the first place).
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Hi, Just tryed to renew my Norton, wished I would have read this site first!
I have a lot of cp exp. , even built some from scratch, but trying to renew Norton is a pain. I spent one full day trying to install downloads and could not. I had no problems with them taking my money, that went through quick and with out a hitch , but now the closest thing to getting help was a email reply saying they would contact me in 48 hours by email only!!!!! The one phone number I found said it was a $29.00 charge for help. Hind sight is always best.

Re: Problems downloading Norton
I have had all these problems at various points in the past. I have now abandonned Symantec/Norton and run Zone Alarm. It uses much less system resources and is much less 'in your face'. I also run PC Tools Registry Mechanic in place of Norton Utilities.
Recommend everyone else to change.
