Forgive me if this is not the place to ask for help, but hysteria is setting in.
It all started back in August, when I caught the blaster worm virus.
Once I realised why Windows kept closing down on me, I got a friend to download the patch from microsoft (I couldn't stay online long enough) - we installed it & things seemed to go back to normal.
Wanting to learn from this painful lesson I paid for & tried to download Norton Antivirus. But it wouldn't download completely. Even after appearing to be downloading for a couple of hours, it was not complete.
Screens would appear and then more or less instantly disappear, however once I managed to click on "Next" & the following error message appeared:
"Windows cannot find c:\Program Files\Norton Antivirus\navapsvc.exe"
I sent a variety of messages to Symantec trying to get them to help me, but with no luck. They just repeat the same instructions.
So I cancelled the download order & bought a CD to be sent by post.
The CD arrived a couple of days ago & guess what - the same thing happened! The very same error message appeared during installation. However it did seem to install & the icons are there on the Start Menu.
But it won't work.
So then I tried to uninstall it, so I could try again - (I had forgotten to turn the firewall off, & I thought that might be the reason)
& it won't uninstall. Duh .....
I have a Dell PC, running Windows XP.
Please can somebody help me - I have been on the point of throwing the PC out the window on several occasions.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!
Regards,
Kate

Re: Problems downloading Norton
Hi,
Just found this site after major frustrations myself. I downloaded NIS in September and since then have had nothing but problems. I find it 100% effective because with it enabled I can't access the internet or emails. Can't even access liveupdate. You see, if you can't access anything you can't get attacked by viruses or worms. Clever or what??
I've tried to contact Symantec but so far have been studiously ignored. How did you manage to get through to them.
After a lot of years using Norton very successfully I'm extremely hacked off and looking to replace it with something that works properly.

Re: Problems downloading Norton
HI THERE RAY,
I HAVE BEEN ABLE TO CONTACT SYMANTEC THROUGH THEIR TECHNICAL SUPPORT VIA EMAIL, WHICH I SEE YOU CANNOT USE, THE ONLY OTHER WAY IS THE TELEHONE , I DID TRY THAT WAY ONCE AND WAS ASKED FOR MY CREDIT CARD DETAILS SO THEY COULD CHARGE ME FOR THE HELP THAT I REALLY NEEDED (I WOULD CALL THAT DAYLIGHT ROBBERY) NEEDLESS TO SAY I HUNG UP SHARPISH.
I DID EVENTUALLY GET A REFUND BUT IT TOOK SOME EMAILS AND STRAIGHT TALKING TO RECIEVE IT.
I STILL HAVE NOT UPDATED THE NORTON FIREWALL AND ANTIVIRUS, STILL PONDERING WHICH SYSTEM TO USE AND I HAVENT A CLUE!
GOOD LUCK WITH WITH YOUR QUEST IN CONTACTING SYMANTEC.
YOU JUST MAY BE THE ONE THAT THEY CAN HELP!!!!! BUT I WON'T HOLD MY BREATH!
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Hi Barbara
Thanks for the reply which is a damn sight more than I've had from Symantec.
I have now ditched NIS2004 and reloaded my old NAV 2002. This has given me another 12 months free updates, some maybe thats the way to beat the buggers, reload the old versions when they run out and get new free updates!!
What email address did you use for Symantec? I'll try again to get a refund from the rip-off merchants.

Re: Problems downloading Norton
HI RAY,
]
THE EMAIL ADDRESS THAT I USED WAS www.symantecstore.com/global TO OBTAIN MY REFUND.
IT WAS NOT EASY , YOU HAVE TO DOWNLOAD WHAT THEY TERM AS "A LETTER OF DESTRUCTION" BASICALLY ITS A FORM THAT YOU FILL OUT WITH DETAILS OF ORDER NUMBER AND THE PROBLEMS YOU HAVE HAD WITH PURCHASED DOWNLOADS. (WHICH I WAS UNABLE TO DO).
WHAT IS SO IRONIC YOU HAVE TO AGREE TO DESTROY WHAT YOU HAVEN'T GOT.
ONCE YOU HAVE FILLED OUT THE FORM YOU EMAIL IT BACK TO THEM AND THEY THEN DECIDE IF YOU MEET THE REQUIREMENTS FOR A REFUND.
ONCE AGAIN GOOD LUCK,
REGARDS BARBARA.
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Hi Barbara,
Many thanks, I'll give it a try. Fortunately I still have the order details.

Re: Problems downloading Norton
HUM,
I've just spent 14 hours trying to activate a downloaded NIS 2005. They keep saying it's firewall related or Parental Controls. I turned off the firewall completely ( twice ) and my ISP has no Parental Controls. I have total free access to the web if I should so choose. I've had NIS since 2001 and every year they give me a problem ( 3 upgrades and 2 Subscription ). There are practically no people that work there, just bots that spew limited information. So I've got 15 days to solve the problem, over the holidays?
Jan. 4, 2005 it will stop working......
You can't activate it on the phone if you downloaded it. The activation is claimed to help prevent software piracy ( of an inferior product with limited support ). I paid for the download with a credit card, can't be much more real than that. They even plugged in the code for me on the activation screen. Product is paid for and hours later download was complete. I go to install it, which it did, overwriting my functional NIS 2003 and in 15 days it's going to self destruct.
NIS Goodbye

Re: Problems downloading Norton
The following is more to do with NAV when you do get it running, and also Norton Internet Security (which includes a firewall), but it may have some future relevance to some of the problems above.
Occasionally there will be frequent errors sending and receving email (such as 0x800ccc0d in Outlook Express and 10060 or Error reading from network Cause: Connection closed by foreign host in Eudora) for no reason, when nothing has apparently been altered on the system.
LiveUpdate not only updates virus signatures, but also often the software components of the package, and sometimes these updates contain programming bugs. These can, as someone put it above, protect your computer by not allowing anything at all in or out.
This happened to many people on 7 Dec 2004, but Symantec must have fixed it around a week later, so that running LiveUpdate then cured that particular problem.
