Forgive me if this is not the place to ask for help, but hysteria is setting in.
It all started back in August, when I caught the blaster worm virus.
Once I realised why Windows kept closing down on me, I got a friend to download the patch from microsoft (I couldn't stay online long enough) - we installed it & things seemed to go back to normal.
Wanting to learn from this painful lesson I paid for & tried to download Norton Antivirus. But it wouldn't download completely. Even after appearing to be downloading for a couple of hours, it was not complete.
Screens would appear and then more or less instantly disappear, however once I managed to click on "Next" & the following error message appeared:
"Windows cannot find c:\Program Files\Norton Antivirus\navapsvc.exe"
I sent a variety of messages to Symantec trying to get them to help me, but with no luck. They just repeat the same instructions.
So I cancelled the download order & bought a CD to be sent by post.
The CD arrived a couple of days ago & guess what - the same thing happened! The very same error message appeared during installation. However it did seem to install & the icons are there on the Start Menu.
But it won't work.
So then I tried to uninstall it, so I could try again - (I had forgotten to turn the firewall off, & I thought that might be the reason)
& it won't uninstall. Duh .....
I have a Dell PC, running Windows XP.
Please can somebody help me - I have been on the point of throwing the PC out the window on several occasions.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!
Regards,
Kate

Re: Problems downloading Norton
I think there are two actions you can take:
1) buy a Mac (no, I don't have one, but am just about to get one for my parents and have been told that there are virtually no viruses that attack Macs - this seems too good to be true, does anyone have any idea if it is?)
2) demand a refund from Norton, which they claim will work if you have a receipt (note: I STILL don't have my money!). The number in the UK is 020-7616 5600, and involves you sending the CD back to them in the Netherlands (yes, of course this happens at your cost! silly question!).
Then, once you've uninstalled NIS, go for a firewall/av solution from some other company. I have checked with www.dabs.com (I have found them to be reasonably quick and efficient) and they offer a package from McAfee. I don't know if it is any good, but presume it will cover all the usual things, and might not be as badly written as Norton is. The full link for this is: http://www.dabs.com/uk/channels/software/productView.htm?quicklinx=2ST0 - perhaps there is someone out there who has tried this product and could comment?
Good luck!
Michael
Re: Problems downloading Norton
In regards to you not receiving a refund from Norton. If you charged it on a charge card or a Bank card - call the bank, explain the situation and ask them to reverse the charges. I hope this helps.
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Hi,
oops, mistake on my part - Norton did actually refund my money more quickly than I had assumed: it was there within two weeks of my refund application, but I had overlooked it on the bank statement (partly since I had expected it to take much longer - I shouldn't be so cynical!). So I would retract my comments about their slowness in giving refunds.... but not on selling a lousy product!!!

Re: Problems downloading Norton
I have Norton loaded on my computer, but after being infected by a virus. Which I believe I have since removed, I can't get Live Updates and I can't get on to the www.symantec.com website. Because I can't access the website the LiveUpdates are not being processe.
Any suggestions.
Re: Problems downloading Norton
My norton antivirus is up for renewal on 5 November and I am unsure if it is worth the money. I use Mac OSX 10.3.5 and Safari browser and Entourage email with no problems, thanks Fran
PS I never saw these forums before, first time yet I used GN since about 1987!
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Well OS X is not theoretically immune from viruses/mass-mailing worms, but I've never come across a virus-infected Mac. Except, that is, for infected Word and Excel documents.
So the value of having an anti-virus program on a Mac is considerably less. Most cheap antivirus programs (e.g. F-Prot) aren't available for Mac. Also note that all email from your GreenNet account is routinely scanned by us for viruses. Our antivirus is updated every two hours and we ban most executable filetypes (so the chances are any virus you did receive would be a ZIP file).
The support forums have been here for a couple of years, Fran - the idea is to share problems and technical expertise among the GN community!

Re: Problems downloading Norton
Somehow I have an infected computer according to Norton, used Spybot, really helpful, and bought spyguard, also really helpful. I cannot seen to uninstall Norton Antivirus 5.0 in add/remove programs. Keep getting messages from porn sites, and sick of clicking that junk off. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Bought ready to take a sledge hammer to hit, that will fix that worm!
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Have you tried following the instructions on the other thread about getting rid of adware infections? They are quite in depth but might be worth a try if you are getting desperate as there are some very useful tips:

Re: Problems downloading Norton
oh dear! i have just read about the problems everybody seems to have with norton products, it has made me so depressed, unfortunately i to have been having problems downlowding NIS 2005 UPGRADE.
i have been using from discs i bought nearly 12 months ago (2004 nav and firewall) and now are due to run out. i keep getting messages from symantec saying subscriptions are due on 24/12/04,so in my innocence i tried to upgrade to 2005 - big mistake! paid my money, tried to download
all was going well, downloaded the setup exe on to desktop as instructed
(all that means is set up lots of temp files ready for the actuall download,
i didn't know that at the time cause i am not a computer whiz)
and followed further instruction to download product, that was the beginning of this sorry tale.
at the moment i have give up, i seem to be passed from customer services to technical support to customer store and back to customer services again,
talk about pass the buck! bless them.
in all honesty they have replied to my frantic pleas for help but i am still without 2005 upgrade.and 40 quid worse off.
now i am in the process of trying to get a refund, that in it's self is a feat of endurance 10 emails later i am still wating for a what they call a letter of destruction, can you believe that one! HELP SOMEONE!!!!!
