Forgive me if this is not the place to ask for help, but hysteria is setting in.
It all started back in August, when I caught the blaster worm virus.
Once I realised why Windows kept closing down on me, I got a friend to download the patch from microsoft (I couldn't stay online long enough) - we installed it & things seemed to go back to normal.
Wanting to learn from this painful lesson I paid for & tried to download Norton Antivirus. But it wouldn't download completely. Even after appearing to be downloading for a couple of hours, it was not complete.
Screens would appear and then more or less instantly disappear, however once I managed to click on "Next" & the following error message appeared:
"Windows cannot find c:\Program Files\Norton Antivirus\navapsvc.exe"
I sent a variety of messages to Symantec trying to get them to help me, but with no luck. They just repeat the same instructions.
So I cancelled the download order & bought a CD to be sent by post.
The CD arrived a couple of days ago & guess what - the same thing happened! The very same error message appeared during installation. However it did seem to install & the icons are there on the Start Menu.
But it won't work.
So then I tried to uninstall it, so I could try again - (I had forgotten to turn the firewall off, & I thought that might be the reason)
& it won't uninstall. Duh .....
I have a Dell PC, running Windows XP.
Please can somebody help me - I have been on the point of throwing the PC out the window on several occasions.
Thanks in advance for any help anyone can give me!
Regards,
Kate

Re: Problems downloading Norton
I have had the same problems downloading Norton Antivirus (NAV)2004 as you have had. I downloaded all the document information that they gave me and still had problems so I cancelled and asked for refund. However I do think it is something to do with Netscape as a browser as when I downloaded Netscape 7.1 I got a little further with the problem which I think is due to the activation key which NAV has and Netscape cannot cope with. I think (though not being in the least technical this is a gut reaction!) that it is necessary to use Internet Explorer to down load but this is just a guess. I would be interested to hear of any expert out there.
Re: Problems downloading Norton
I use Microsoft Explorer, not Netscape.
I have now found out that my operating system has been corrupted - possibly due to the blasterworm virus which I got last August.
So I am now removing all my data files & I'm going to run a "maintenance installation" of Windows XP.
If that doesn't work I'll have to reinstall everything ...
Boring or what?
Lessons to the blissfully ignorant:
install antivirus programme
have a CD-writer
have a back-up system
How many times have I been told this over the years? Don't even ask!
Do I feel stupid?Yes I do!
Good luck!

Re: Problems downloading Norton
Sorry to read of your problem, Kate. When I read your post for the first time yesterday, I wondered whether your system might be suffering from the effects of the virus infection.
If it's not too late, before reinstalling Windows, you might like to have a look at the Blaster Removal Tool at:
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/w32.blaster.worm...
If you feel brave enough, you might avoid having to reinstall Windows. The worst you can do is crash everything and have to start over, which is what you are contemplating anyway! (So do a back-up first)
Another good way to crash your system is to keep a progam running while you install Norton AntiVirus. I know; I've done it :) Now I close down everything including especially Norton AutoProtect and my daughter's MSN Messenger. I even use Start/Run to run Setup.exe rather than use Windows Explorer to locate the downloaded file.
I don't know how XP deals with downloading, but the browser you use should not make any difference. A download manager can be useful if you are using a modem, as it can cope with interruptions, disconnections etc. NetAnts is small, reliable and free If you don't mind the ads. http://www.netants.com/en/
Good luck!

Re: Problems downloading Norton
Thanks Phil,
very helpful, but I had to give up eventually & take my computer to the menders.
Where they found 9 viruses and over 1 thousand infected files.
My biggest problem was that when I bought the PC I considered a CD writer a luxury I couldn't afford, so I had no means of removing my data quickly.
I have now bought an ibook, which is great, & I was planning to get rid of the PC and just use the apple. However part of my work is uploading documents to the website of one of my clients, and to do that I use a text editor located on their site. This text editor only works with Windows - they haven't developed oen for use with a mac, so I spent the best part of today setting up my pc again.
Which is ok, but I downloaded a new version of Eudora and I can't find the .mbx or .toc files anywhere, nor can I find the place on the mac where the mailboxes are kept, so I'm stumped for how you move mailboxes from one computer to the other.
Any ideas?
Thanks for bothering to read this far!
and for any help you can give me
Best regards,
Kate
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Usually Eudora will find any old installation (which is good). You don't need the TOC files because they will be rebuilt if not present. For copying to a new machine, the link below may be useful:

You can often get removal tools for the major virus epidemics from www.sophos.com, and of course AVG free edition from www.grisoft.com is an effective antivirus.
Re: Problems downloading Norton
I also am having probl;ems instaling Nortons System Works. I downloaded
it from the web, it said there were problems during the download, so I waited for the disc to come. I put it in and I can here it running but nothing ever appears on my screen. It just won't downloaqd no matter what I do,
I would like to have my money back! I never had this problem before, so what is going on with Nortons? Judy
Re: Problems downloading Norton
For simple idiots like me who are not very computer literate (not that there are many of us around) it may be helpful to note that since my previous post I have now installed McAfee antivirus security using a CD - no problems at all and no need to spend hours preparing computer.
Naughty Norton
Hello again!
Thanks for all your help re the above.
I now have a clean, virus-free computer.
However I am now getting a message which tell me that Norton AntiVirus has encountered an internal program error and that I should uninstall and reinstall Norton. I have done this a couple of times now. I have been to the Symantec Tech Support page, but they just tell you how to do it, not why it is necessary.
I have run a system scan and there are no viruses in my computer.
Can anyone tell my what this means & what I should do about it?
Thanks
Kate
Re: Problems downloading Norton
Hi,
I was interested to read these comments, and thought you might like to hear about my experience.
I used Norton Internet Security 2003 (which includes Anti-Virus) without any problems on my Win 98SE computer and when it wanted to charge for the new subscription, I bought NIS 2004 from a shop, which wasn't much more expensive than the subscription.
The computer crashed repeatedly during installation (there were no viruses on my system, and it was in good condition), and then caused problems for Netscape 7 and Eudora 6 when it was finally installed. With the latter in particular, it kept telling me that "COM automation" wasn't on, but it never managed to turn it on, even if I asked it to. I also wanted to turn the Norton Anti-Spam function off, since it is not nearly as good as the one that comes with Eudora anyway - this was not possible, it just wouldn't turn off.
I began emailing Norton support - which is something I would only recommend to those with strong nerves - and eventually established that yes, there were faults in NIS 2004 and Symantec were aware of them and were working on them but in the meantime I would just have to put up with the problems caused. I decided I wasn't prepared to do this, and wanted a refund. Quite a few emails later, I was told how to do this, and applied for the refund on the same day. That was on 6.12.03 and almost two months later I still don't seem to have my money.
Having uninstalled NIS 2004 completely (there's a web page somewhere on the Symantec pages describing how to do it that claims that every last reference to the wretched thing is obliterated), I reinstalled 2003, thinking I'd rather pay the renewed subscription! However, whilst there was a nice little surprise regarding the subscription issue (guess!), it has repeatedly failed to update one element of the program completely, and I think I will need to start with the installation again. But it does, at least, seem to work properly, which can't be said for NIS 2004!
Concluding advice: if you've got NIS etc 2003, don't "upgrade" and if you are wanting to get AV or firewall protection, don't go for NIS 2004!
Michael
Re: Problems downloading Norton
oh dear!
thanks for that information - & it's NIS 2004 that I've got.
anyone got any ideas what I should do? It's still telling me to uninstall and reinstall every other day.
