Logs: "Visits" and "Sites"

I thought I had understood the definitions but I can't understand how the number of sites - presumably the places visitors come from - can be greater than the number of visits. This appears to be the case in many of the daily reports but not in the monthly summaries. I have looked at several other people's logs and the pattern seems similar. Stupid question?
