Venue:
At Tower Hamlets Professional Development Centre, English Street, London E3 4TA

A half day of training for primary and secondary
£55 for subscribers to Tower Hamlets Schools Library Service, or £75

Tuesday 7th March 1.30pm to 4.30pm

The aims of the training are:
• To learn classroom techniques for using photographs for various educational aims
• To explore the rationale behind different uses, such as the choice of information provided with them (explanation, captions, background etc).

Explore the use of photos and the power of photos through looking at a range of photos taken across the world and reflecting many different themes, many taken by children.

Participants will take part in a carousel of activities that use photographs, taken from ’51 Things to do with a photo’ - a resource that teachers will take away. These activities can be reworked and adapted according to teachers’ own fresh ideas.

Participants will also choose an educational aim (e.g. stimulating research, enhancing critical thinking, developing empathy or challenging stereotypes) and use the guidance offered to create an activity using one or more photos.

Since 2001, the civil liberties of British citizens have been progressively eroded. Among other examples, the Extradition Act (2003) allows individuals to be extradited to another country for actions that are not criminal in the UK, and without prima facie evidence of a case against them being presented in a British court. This Act can result in long periods of detention without charge (British citizens have been detained for up to eight years).
