An event to explore, explain and campaign against the Communications Data Bill

Cory Doctorow, ORG Advisory Council member, award-winning science fiction writer and co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing, will be giving the headline speech exploring and explaining the Bill. There will be further talks from key civil liberties groups: Open Rights Group, Big Brother Watch, The Foundation for Information Policy Research, Liberty and Index on Censorship, plus in depth presentations on the technical aspects of the Bill from top experts. The speeches will be followed by workshops and group discussions to plan our co-ordinated campaign actions, like mass lobbying of MPs, unite our campaigns and bring the Snoopers’ Charter down.

Since 2001, the civil liberties of British citizens have been progressively eroded. Among other examples, the Extradition Act (2003) allows individuals to be extradited to another country for actions that are not criminal in the UK, and without prima facie evidence of a case against them being presented in a British court. This Act can result in long periods of detention without charge (British citizens have been detained for up to eight years).
