Jon Cruddas MP, Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Responsible Investment, will host a discussion event to launch FairPensions' new report, ‘The Enlightened Shareholder'. Building on the 2011 report ‘Protecting our Best Interests: Rediscovering Fiduciary Obligation', this paper makes the case for statutory clarification of investors' fiduciary duties and presents draft legislation setting out how this could be achieved.
‘Responsible capitalism' is emerging as the key political battleground of 2012, with shareholder power taking centre stage in debates about executive pay. But responsible capitalism requires responsible shareholders. While company directors' duties are based on ‘enlightened shareholder value', many investors continue to believe that their own duties oblige them to be unenlightened. This event will separate the myths about fiduciary duty from the reality and seek to move the debate forward to practical solutions.
