Beyond Mugabe: Debt, justice and development in Zimbabwe
Speakers:

Joy Mabenge, chair, Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development
Mbongeni Ngulube, Zimbabwe Diaspora Focus Group
Nick Dearden, director, Jubilee Debt Campaign

After years of state violence in Zimbabwe, international lenders like the International Monetary Fund and UK government are discussing ways to deal with the country’s $7 billion debt, ahead of anticipated elections in 2013. Experience from around the world shows that if these plans are not opposed, debt could be used to snatch democracy from Zimbabwe's people before they've cast a free vote.

Activists like Joy Mabenge have struggled for freedom and justice for Zimbabwe's people for years. He is chair of the Harare-based Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development, which is campaigning for a debt audit to right these past wrongs, and director of programmes for the Institute for a Democratic Alternative for Zimbabwe. He is in the UK to explain the problems activists face in creating a more democratic and accountable Zimbabwe.

Join Jubilee Debt Campaign to hear more about the origins of Zimbabwe's debts, the situation in Zimbabwe today, and how we in the UK can support Zimbabweans at this crucial time.

Since 2001, the civil liberties of British citizens have been progressively eroded. Among other examples, the Extradition Act (2003) allows individuals to be extradited to another country for actions that are not criminal in the UK, and without prima facie evidence of a case against them being presented in a British court. This Act can result in long periods of detention without charge (British citizens have been detained for up to eight years).
