Date:
8 October 2011 - 12:00pm - 6:00pm
Venue:
Trafalgar Square
Musicians, actors, writers, filmmakers and artists will join MPs and activists from across the movement. Music, film, speech and theatre will feature through the day, with speakers and performers including John Pilger, Jemima Khan, Lowkey, Billy Bragg, novelist Ahdaf Soueif, and actors Simon McBurney and Mark Rylance. The assembly will be opened by Joe Glenton, the soldier who went to jail rather than fight in Afghanistan, and Grace McCann, who attempted a citizen's arrest on Tony Blair in 2009. Events will include a naming of the dead ceremony led by Joan Humphries who lost her grandson in Afghanistan and Rose Gentle who lost her son in Iraq. As well as music, films and readings on the main stage there will be a marquee with meetings, stalls and installations by a host of different organisations. The Assembly will end with a march, led by ex-soldiers and their families, to Downing Street to demand that no more lives are wasted in Afghanistan. Please do all you can to promote the assembly as widely as possible. SEE THE ANTI WAR ASSEMBLY WEBSITE: http://www.antiwarassembly.org/

Since 2001, the civil liberties of British citizens have been progressively eroded. Among other examples, the Extradition Act (2003) allows individuals to be extradited to another country for actions that are not criminal in the UK, and without prima facie evidence of a case against them being presented in a British court. This Act can result in long periods of detention without charge (British citizens have been detained for up to eight years).
